When will school resume in Nigeria?
This particular question has been the headache of virtually all students since the pandemic started.
Will there be waec this year? Has Waec been cancelled?
Yes, there will be waec this year, weav starts on the 17th of August
The final classes in both secondary and primary schools will resume officially on August 4th, 2002 and others will follow suite... More details still coming
This decision was made today, Monday 27th August 2020 after a meeting held by the stakeholders in the education sectors which was released by the director of press and public relations, Ben Bem Goong.
The resumption is geared towards the West African Examination (WAEC) exercise scheduled to take place on the 17th of August,2020 after the Federal government reversed its decision for students to partake in the exams, stating that it was not the right time for school to resume.
According to the statement released by the director of press and public relations, ministry of education
“Secondary schools in the country are to reopen as from the 4th of August, 2020 for exit classes only. Students will have two weeks within which to prepare for the West African Examinations (WAEC) due to start on the 17th of August, 2020,” the statement read.
“These were the unanimous decisions reached today at a virtual consultative meeting between the Federal Ministry of Education, Honourable Commissioners of Education of the 36 states, the Nigeria Union of Teachers, (NUT), the proprietors of private schools, and Chief Executives of examination bodies.
“It was agreed that the exit classes should resume immediately after the Sallah break, from the 4th of August, 2020 to enable them to prepare for the WAEC examinations scheduled to commence from the 17th of August, 2020.
“The meeting also resolved that a passionate appeal be made to the Federal Government through the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 and public-spirited Nigerians for assistance to schools across the country to enable them fast track the preparations for safe reopening, as agreed.”
Note
The resumption date is only for students in exit classes and are the only students expected to resume. This will enable exit students to complete the year.
Ss3 students and GCE...
Do you remember that some days ago a news started circulating that there is no waec this year, that the SS3 students may have to write the November/December GCE... Whether we like it or not, this is going to affect students in secondary school.
By now you should know Nigeria is a big joke right? Few weeks ago when FG(Federal Government) opened schools and said they will write exams... About week after they revoked it...
Mind you, WAEC (West African Examination Council) is not just a Nigerian exam, it covers all the Countries in West Africa... Ghana,Liberia, SierraLeone, The Gambia etc..
Shortly after Waec released timetable but Nigeria isn't ready to comply 😢...
Nigerian secondary school students in Ss3 and Jss3 classes may have to sit for their final secondary school exam in November during the General Certificate Examination (GCE) if the timetable for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) is not shifted, the Nigerian government has said.
The West African Examination Council (WAEC) had fixed for theoretical papers to start on August 3 and last till September 5, 2020. But the Nigerian government has negotiated for the timetable to enable students in SS3 in Nigeria participate in the exams.
However, the Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, speaking during the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 briefing on Thursday, July 23, in Abuja, said
"should Nigerian government fail to convince WAEC to shift the timetable for WASSCE, that students in Nigeria would have only the option of writing their final exam in November, when GCE had been fixed to hold".
He said if on the other hand, Nigeria was able to meet up with the WAEC timetable for WASSCE, that there was already a negotiated timeline to move local language subjects such as Ibo, Hausa and Yoruba behind to enable all participating countries the needed period to take the general subjects at the same time.
According to the minister, the Ministry of Education had scheduled a meeting with relevant stakeholders for July 30 to assess readiness towards safe reopening of schools.
“The Ghanaians will take examinations peculiar to them. But they are all in the first part of the time table so we will work out a domestication module that will take our peculiar subjects behind after we have done generals.

“This will buy us the time we need for all of us to be at par with the rest of West Africa and operating at the same time because the unanimity with which WAEC has always worked is still very important to us.

“Nigeria is not moving away from it, the option would have been to go to November to take the GCE external exams. Nigeria is carefully studying that if in the event everything fails, we may go to that way,” he said.

This news is really disheartening as many SS3 students are already dreaming of entering the University this year...
Those who are already at home may feel happy about this...But this in turn will only make admission next year to be extremely difficult and challenging..
